The Last year’s winners being screened this year at the festival are:

Bickleigh on Exe C of E VC Primary School
Thorverton C of E Primary School
Park Community School, Barnstaple
Highweek Community Primary School
Coombeshead College, Newton Abbott

How it works:
Normally when film is projected at a cinema, the projectionist has a countdown warning from Ten to One to the start of the film, these are just numbers up on a screen for a second each. At Animated Exeter we like to see a more creative approach and are asking schools to come up with different ideas to display these numbers.

So we are encouraging pupils to think up other, more visual ways of counting down from 10 – 1, and to send us storyboards with 10 rectangular ‘film’ frames on a sheet or two of A4, with a picture in each, representing numbers 10 down to 1. The pictures can be as funny or sad or angry as they want. We would just emphasize Keep It Simple and think of how each picture would change into the next one. But remember one second isn’t very long! As well as the pictures, think of Sound: voices, or sound effects to go with the pictures, and write about the sound under each picture. This will give Roger Compton some ideas to help you make a soundtrack for your countdown.

Example: Park Community School used a dripping tap and as each drip fell, it formed a number, and then trickled down the drain.

A more simple example: 10 drawings of a child floating in the air holding ten fat balloons, and they pop one by one, until the last one, and the child lands gently on the ground.

Send in as many storyboards as you like, and we will select the five best entrants. Then a group of ten will be invited to come down during the week before the February half term, to the Digital Media Education Centre: 6 pupils to work on the animation and 4 to work on a soundtrack to go with it.

Important note: Please don’t use cartoon characters from your favourite films – we can’t use those images, as we could get into trouble with the big animation companies!

The deadline for entries is November 29th 2002
