BEST ANIMATION DIRECTION
1st: Playing Ghosts Dir. Bianca Ansems, National Film and Television School An emotional and yet not mawkish story with clever use of the camera to tell the story from a child's POV. Seamlessly executed with lovely story surprises. (The jury commented that they hadn't seen hot breath in stop frame animation before!).
2nd:Jackie and Kevin 1977 Dir. Daisy Gould, University of Wales, Newport An incredibly original idea, executed in a consistent and sensitive style.
Commended: Damned Dir Richard Phelan, National Film and Television School An ambitious story well told and with great character design.
TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENT
1st: Opening Night. (Models and Animation Sequences) Dirs. Josh and Nathan Flynn, University of Glamorgan Wow! And wow again! We were all desperate to see this film. A unanimous decision, easily made.
2nd: Jump Karthik Ramasamy and Perry Yap, Bournemouth University NCCA. Inventive and thorough use of Nuke, this film showed a wide understanding of the use of compositing in a 3d environment.
Screen Out Loud
1st: All Consuming Love (Man in a Cat) Dir. Louis Hudson
A wonderfully surreal and humorous world with its own internal logic. Executed with energy and aplomb. Well done!
2nd: Spin Spun Span Dirs. Emily Howells and Anne Wilkins. Inventive imagery executed in a mesmerising and compelling way.
Commended: Moxie Dir. Steve Irwin Wonderfully dark storytelling.
